Neighbors,
City Council meets next on Monday, July 7 at 7 p.m. I'm keeping things brief here.
I hope you enjoy the weekend safely with family and friends. This year in particular, Independence Day is a good moment to:
Remind you to vote in the upcoming August 5th election! My Council colleague, Erica Briggs, wrote up a helpful election guide on Proposals A and B. As a former library trustee and now a Council member, I strongly encourage you to VOTE YES on both. Our Downtown Library has served the community well for almost 70 years. But as library services and events have grown, the Library Board has determined that the building’s spaces, systems, and structure no longer meet community needs. A new Downtown Library would provide accessible, sustainable, and inspiring public spaces—funded by the development of housing above the library—bringing much-needed public amenities to the heart of downtown. And importantly: no new taxes.
Remind us all that democracy isn’t self-sustaining. It depends on us showing up, staying informed, participating, and refusing to look away when democratic norms and the rule of law are broken. Protect Democracy is working to defeat the authoritarian threat, build more resilient democratic institutions, and protect our freedom and liberal democracy. They offer a list of actions you can take right now, including invest in local news, know your representatives, become an expert in spotting and fighting mis- and disinformation, support your library, and go to a local community meeting (among many others).
